Conor Carey

I'm fundraising for a world without MS

Hello and thanks for coming to visit my page.

My name is Conor Carey, i have turned 50  years young so that's why this Irish lad is challenging himself again for a 3rd successful year to complete this years Cykelnerven. I am Married with 2 adorable kids, Aimee Rose 12yrs and Michael 8yrs. I live in a small village in east Inishowen, Co Donegal, Ireland. I was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis when my lttle boy was 6 months old.

I am doing Cykelnerven 2024 because I personally know that each revolution of our wheels and cent donated goes directly to research into Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.

In 2019 I was the first Irish person EVER to attempt AND complete Cykelnerven. We climbed Val Thorens that year.

In 2022 (still 1st Irish lad to try this cycle) I tried and completed Cykelnerven again when we cycled up Alpe Duez.

This year I haver turned 50 years young so wanted to try and complete it again to see if I am progressing much with this disease. This year on our first zoom call I heard another irish accent so alas the word on this event is definitely getting out there and I won't be the only Irish accent on this trip.

In order to get my leg spasms under control I am attending a local Sports Massage therapist called Hugh Heron who regularly Massages/dry needles and does cupping on my legs keeping them manageable.

As I was initially unable to unclip from my pedals so unable to use clip ins when I decided to try Cykelnerven this year I attended a local Podiatrist Shauna Nash from the Foyle Foot Clinic who made temporary and then permanent insoles for my training shoes and also my clip in cycling shoes.

This year I took advantage of using a coach to get me fit enough to complete it (Coach Mc Kinney). Through his Personalised Dynamic Training Plan my  training should be more structured & directional than past years.

Taking my Neurologists advice of 'Use It Or Lose It' as my Mantra & driving force I decided to try make a positive change to my life and hopefully keep progression of my disease to a minimum whilst not going down the Disease Modifying Drug direction.

I decided to get fit, eat better and take great care of my mental health.

Okay my conditions have become much more noticeable but I'm not going to get rid of my leg drop and my walking issues, brain fog, physical & mental exhaustion I experience, leg spasms & weakness but I am definitely going to give it my best shot at staying out of a wheelchair. I have my strong family & friends behind me to give me all the encouragement I could ever hope for. With the help of my physio (JT Physio), my Podiatrist (Foyle Foot Clinic) for my shoe inserts and Hugh Herron (Complementary Therapy) for my regular cupping & dry needling I can be sure that I am definitely myself the very best chance of completing it well this year.

On this June 4th, I'm taking part in one of the world's toughest cycling challenges, the Cykelnerven.

Cykelnerven is famed as Europe’s most unique and challenging charity cycling event. I'll be riding 400km over the toughest mountain climbs of this year’s Tour de France.

I'm taking part in the Cykelnerven to raise money for research and cure of Multiple Sclerosis. Please join me in the fight against MS by contributing to my page.
